Most Excellent Grand High Priest
Mark Aaron Wright was exalted to the Royal Arch Degree on June 20, 1981, in Bartlesville Chapter No. 55, a chapter originally chartered by the Grand Chapter of Indian Territory, now in the State of Oklahoma. After moving to the District of Columbia, he affiliated with Washington-Potomac Chapter No. 8, where he served as high priest in 2019. He was honored with the Grand Chapter’s Meritorious Companion Award in 2020. In 2022, he was elected to the bottom of the progressive grand line of the Grand Chapter of the District of Columbia as Grand Captain of the Host, ultimately being elected and installed as the Most Excellent Grand High Priest of Royal Arch Masons in the District of Columbia, on March 14, 2025.
In the York Rite, he is a past Illustrious Master of Washington Council No. 2, Cryptic Masons, received the Order of Ish Sodi, and currently serves the Grand Council as Rt:.Ill:. Principal Conductor of the Work. In Templary, he presided as Commander of Columbia Chapter No. 2, has been the Em:. Grand Prelate of the Grand Commandery since 2021, and now is the junior past Preceptor of Robert V. Hines Chapter, Sovereign Order of Knights Preceptor. He also belongs to Universal Council No. 70, Knight Masons USA, and Washington and Lee College No. 93, York Rite Sovereign College of North America.
He joined the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite in 1980. Ill. Wright was invested as a Knight Commander of the Court of Honor in 2011, was coroneted an Inspector General Honorary 33º in 2015. He was knighted in the Royal Order of Scotland in 2015, and has been initiated into Topeka (Kan.) Council No. 1, Ancient Toltec Rite.
On August 5, 1980, he was raised by his father to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason in Bartlesville Lodge No. 284. W:.Bro:. Wright affiliated with Federal Lodge No. 1, in Washington, serving as 153rd master of the lodge in 2013. He was secretary of the Masters and Wardens Association for three terms. In the Grand Lodge of D. C., he currently performs as Grand Director of Music.
In other Masonic activities, he is honorary member of Azim Grotto, M:.O:.V:.P:.E:.R:., New York City; affiliated with Almas Temple, A:.A:.O:.N:.M:.S:., in D. C.; and has been initiated into the Ancient and Heroic Order of the Gordian Knot, and the Masonic Order of the Bath. As a youth, he was master councilor of his DeMolay chapter and was named the International DeMolay of the Year for 1979. In Nation’s Capital DeMolay, he was assistant executive officer for adult training, grand commander and later secretary for the Nation’s Capital Court of Chevaliers, and dean and later secretary of the Nation’s Capital Preceptory DeMolay Legion of Honor.
Professionally, Dr. Wright is a retired attorney and appellate judge, and came to D. C. to be the national manager of American Indian probate program of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. He has been an adjunct professor at a several institutions, most recently at Georgetown University. Often seen on stage and screen, has sung over 30 professional opera productions, danced as a supernumerary with international touring ballet companies at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and has been on numerous television shows, including The West Wing, House of Cards, VEEP, and Reservation Dogs. In retirement, he resides in the District of Columbia with his golden retriever, Sophie, whose cream-colored dog hair accompanies him everywhere he goes.
