Welcome to the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons in the District of Columbia
The Grand Royal Arch Chapter of the District of Columbia operates within the broader framework of Royal Arch Masonry, which is considered by many to be the culmination of regular Craft Masonry. Royal Arch Masonry delves deeper into the Masonic teachings and is focused on the principles of knowledge, fraternity, and understanding. It explores further the lessons of companionship, morality, and symbolism introduced in the three degrees of the Craft Lodge.
This particular Grand Chapter, like other Grand Chapters, oversees the operation of several subordinate chapters within its jurisdiction, which in this case is the geographic area of the District of Columbia. These subordinate chapters work the Royal Arch degrees, providing members opportunities to further their Masonic education, engage in charity and community service, and enjoy fellowship with other Masons who are interested in the deeper symbolic meanings and teachings of Freemasonry.
Membership in the Royal Arch is open to Master Masons in good standing with their Blue Lodge, and it is often seen as an essential step for those seeking further light in Masonry. The degrees conferred in the Royal Arch Chapters are a continuation of the Masonic journey, focusing on the recovery of the lost word of a Master Mason, which is considered the keystone of a Freemason’s knowledge.
The Grand Chapter of the District of Columbia was founded in 1867.
“Royal Arch Masonry will be the place where brothers from different masonic backgrounds can come together to enjoy comradeship, learn leadership and planning skills, experience meaningful and well-presented rituals, and have a positive impact on their blue lodges and local communities.”
